What is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a mandatory pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting 30 European countries. With an approved ETIAS, travelers can enter Europe multiple times, staying up to 90 days within any 180-day period, with validity lasting up to three years or until the passport expires.

ETIAS UPDATE

The European Union (EU) has confirmed that the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be rolled out in stages to ensure a smooth transition before it becomes mandatory.

Once ETIAS is officially launched, there will be a six-month transitional period during which travelers can apply for ETIAS, but it will not yet be mandatory for entry into the EU. During this time:

1. Travelers can still enter the EU without ETIAS, as
long as they meet all other entry requirements.

2. The transitional period is expected to last at
least six months, allowing travelers time to
    adjust.

After the transitional phase, ETIAS will become a requirement for most travelers. However, a grace period will follow, with one key exception:

1. First-time travelers entering the EU during the
grace period can still enter without ETIAS if
they meet all other entry conditions.

2. Travelers who previously entered during the
transitional period must have ETIAS for re-
    entry.
3. The grace period is also expected to last at
    least six months.

(i) ETIAS will only become mandatory a few
months after the Entry/Exit System (EES) is
    implemented.

(ii) EES Delays: The launch of EES has been
postponed multiple times, which has also
pushed ETIAS implementation to late 2025 or
     even 2026.

(iii) The EES is an automated system for
registering non-EU travelers each time they
      cross an external EU border.

ETIAS will apply to visa-exempt, non-EU travelers who currently do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Zone. Once fully implemented, applications can be submitted via:

(a) The official ETIAS website
(b) The ETIAS mobile app

The ETIAS application fee is $7.50 USD, and the authorization is valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
